What prescribers need to know

  • Requires that ALL controlled substance prescriptions be electronically prescribed (Schedule II-V)
  • The law takes effect October 24, 2019 – one year from the date of the Governor’s signature.
  • No prescription for a controlled substance in Schedule II may be refilled
  • No Schedule II-V prescriptions may be dispensed without an e-Rx
  • No prescription for controlled substances in Schedule II or IV cannot be filled or refilled more than 6 months after the original date OR refilled more than 5 times after the date of prescription unless renewed by practitioner

Pennsylvania Exceptions

  • Except when dispensed or administered directly to the patient by a practitioner or his authorized agent, other pharmacist to the ultimate user
  • Except in emergency situations
  • Excludes veterinarians
  • Patients enrolled in hospice programs or nursing homes
