What prescribers need to know

Providers are required to use electronic prescribing for Schedule II-VI substances. Prescribers must notify the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program each time a prescription for benzodiazepine is issued.

This bill aligns an existing Massachusetts partials fill law with new federal regulations that allow patients to fill the rest of an opioid prescription at the same pharmacy within five days of the issue date on the script.

Acute care hospitals, satellite emergency facilities, or emergency service programs are required to record an opiate-related overdose incident and results of the substance use evaluation in a patient's electronic medical record.
